Spring 2023 Portfolio

From Art to Architecture

Design Foundations • Form + Space + Color

  • This project explores how principles found in two-dimensional artwork can be translated into three-dimensional architectural form. Beginning with Richard Diebenkorn's Ocean Park No. 43 and Wassily Kandinsky's Soft Pressure, the study analyzes composition, structure, proportion, hierarchy, and color as generators of spatial relationships.
  • The design process progresses from 2-D compositional and line studies to 3-D line and plane models, transforming abstract relationships into physical space. These exercises investigate how depth, hierarchy, movement, emphasis, and visual balance can emerge from the reinterpretation of an existing composition.
  • A complementary massing study explores dominant, subdominant, and subordinate forms using modular cubes and geometric components. Manipulating scale, position, orientation, and proportion demonstrates how relatively simple volumes can establish architectural hierarchy and spatial order.
  • These investigations culminate in an Art Deco-inspired lifeguard tower influenced by the architecture and visual character of South Beach. Iterative massing, elevation, and color studies translate the earlier abstract investigations into a functional architectural object emphasizing visibility, safety, adaptability, and a strong geometric identity.
  • The project documents a progression from artistic analysis to abstraction, spatial exploration, and architectural design, demonstrating how principles of form, composition, and color can evolve from two-dimensional ideas into functional three-dimensional space.

Art Pavilion (Fall 2022)

Art Pavilion

Exhibition Architecture • Art + Space + Movement

  • The Art Pavilion is a conceptual exhibition structure designed for large-scale sculpture and immersive installations within a transparent, open architectural framework. Organized around a central circulation spine, twin staircases, and a vertical sculptural tower, the pavilion guides visitors through a sequence of gallery spaces, elevated walkways, and viewing platforms.
  • The design emphasizes visual connections between levels, allowing visitors to experience artworks from multiple perspectives as they move through the building. Extensive glazing brings daylight into the exhibition spaces while maintaining connections between the interior, displayed artwork, and surrounding landscape.
  • Featured installations include the spiral Dice Tower, a suspended guitar composition, and an illuminated topographic wall relief. Rather than treating these works as isolated objects, the architecture positions them within a larger spatial sequence in which circulation and changing viewpoints become part of the exhibition experience.
  • The Art Pavilion ultimately explores architecture as a medium for artistic expression, where circulation becomes performance, structure contributes to composition, and visitors become active participants in a spatial narrative of form, light, art, and movement.

Uruguay House (Fall 2022)

Uruguay House

Xangri-Lá, Brazil • Architectural Precedent Analysis
Original Design: Occa Urbana • 2021

  • This project is an analytical reconstruction and representational study of the Uruguay House by Occa Urbana in Xangri-Lá, Brazil. Through site plans, floor plans, sections, elevations, and an exploded axonometric drawing, the study examines how the residence organizes space, circulation, structure, and connections to the surrounding landscape.
  • The house is characterized by stacked horizontal volumes, a strong roof plane, and an elevated upper level that creates shaded outdoor space below while framing views from the residence. Public and private functions are distributed across two levels and connected through a clearly articulated stair and circulation system.
  • Plans and sections examine relationships between interior spaces, exterior terraces, circulation, and vertical volume, while the exploded axonometric separates the foundation, lower level, upper level, and roof to reveal how the building is assembled as an integrated architectural system.
  • By reconstructing an existing work through technical drawing, the project develops an understanding of architectural representation, proportion, circulation, spatial organization, and building assembly, demonstrating how drawings can be used not simply to document architecture, but to understand how it works.

Modern residential designs showcase creativity

The front part of the deck next to the house came with the house. I added the rest of the deck and pergola over the years as the needs arose.
